The Rocky River Story

From concept and design to production and installation — inside and out — Rocky River does it all!

Cameron Mahy, founder of the Rocky River Sign Company, started out as a sign writer and was trained to be a commercial copy artist by the Master Journeymen at Mediacom (now Viacom). Artists from Denmark, China, Scotland and England taught Cam things about the industry that he could never have learned in school. That trade is gone – Cam was among the last to learn it.

Through his tenure at Mediacom, Cam picked up a skill set that is second-to-none in the following areas:

• Colour – extensive research on paints & mediums in his past allowed Cam to develop a keen eye for colour. His ability to hand mix colours has made it an easy transition, enabling Cam to do this on the computer where colours are mixed today.
• Layout and Design – Cam has a skill for knowing what is visually correct for outdoor advertising requirements including store fronts, vehicles, billboards etc,.
• Application – Cam applies all of the above to new technology, using a large format digital printer that will produce full colour signage.

After leaving Mediacom (Viacom), Cam opened his own business in 1994.

The name, “Rocky River Sign Company” was a natural evolution of the dialogue and camaraderie between small town Cam and his Toronto friends. Cam was often called “ Rocky River” because his roots were in “Stoney Creek”, Ontario. The nick name stuck. Cam decided that starting and running one’s own business was very much a “ rocky river”; one minute you are in a calm pool of water, the next minute you are shooting the rapids.

The Rocky River Sign Company was born.

In 1996, Robin Mahy joined the Rocky River Sign Company. With a background in finance and administration, Robin was a natural to take on these responsibilities for the growing company.

Her creativity was soon discovered and now Robin works on the apparel part of the business as well as on the design and layout of small signs, banners and vehicles.
